If a police officer asks you to pretend to still be friendly with the person who stole your checks and cashed two of them, you will discover whether or not you are a world class actress. You have to be good to smile and laugh with a woman who has betrayed your trust and friendship.

I became my own detective after discovering there were two fraudulent checks paid out of my account. I identified five missing checks from three different check books. I went to the bank to find out exactly when and where the checks had been cashed. I then went to the store and asked them to show me the video of that day and time. I watched as my neighbor and good friend of two years handed my check to the cashier for her cigarettes. I handed the evidence to the police officer that fateful Friday morning.

He hoped to get her to come in on her own and speak to him. That is when I realized he wanted me to act like nothing was wrong, if I could. I am pretty sure I went from good to world class that day. I tried avoiding her, but she was persistent in coming over to discuss the latest gossip. My mother in law was there to see my performance. When the officer asked her to come in and talk to him about fraud, I led her astray. ‘ He must have a question about your finances and the investigation you have going with your accounts’ I said. ‘Of course I mentioned it to him, you told me it was probably the same person who stole your money last month.’ She was panicked, I put her at ease. I deserved an Oscar.

Later, that day after some back and forth between her and the officer, he finally told her over the phone that we knew it was her and she needed to come in and speak with him. I received a panicked text message. It read something like:

‘I didn’t do this, please your dog was dying and you gave me a check that one day to get you some food and stuff. You didn’t want to leave him. I gave you the receipts. If you had told me that these were the checks you were talking about I would have reminded you. I would never do this to you.’

I read the message and laughed. I called the officer. ‘I have a text message to send you. We have admission of guilt.’

This is my entry for LJ Idol: S9 Week 5. This week’s topic was “Build A Better Mousetrap”. These events happened a year and a half ago. They were the inspiration for the thought process of last weeks entry.

It amazes me the lies people will go through when panicked ... but I'm glad you got her found out, even if it must have hurt like hell :(

*shakes head* I remember this going down last time. this is a great use of a craptacular event. I think the spare language makes it more punchy, too.

When you were tracking her down, did you have a narration going on in your head? ("The clerk at the store was playing hardball, but I was playin' harder. It took some convincing, but they coughed up the tape. What I saw on it made my jaw drop. 'Well I'll be a monkey's uncle!' I exclaimed at the revelation betrayal...")

Although you didn't really need it. I'm sorry about your friend and neighbor, but on the other hand, kudos on the investigation.

It's amazing what people will do in a panic. I'm very glad that she was caught for what she did.

Geez-- so even when caught, her response was to attempt to re-manipulate you all over again. What a jerk.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I can tell how hurt you still are about it.

Great opening sentence, btw. Hooks the reader right away. :)

haha I told the officer that she was really good at manipulation. He called me back that day just before he finally told her we know, come in. His response was, wow, I see what you mean. Then he played me a voice message she left him. It was crazy the tale she was trying to spin on there.

Her parents were in town a few weeks ago. Her Dad set me off a bit. It was juvenile and I should have just been, whatever, but it really set me on edge.

The sentence popped into my head and I had to race for paper to get it down. I was literally thinking, this is the kind of opening Kate was talking about! lol

Good job at playing detective!

As the officer said, she didn't even buy anything she absolutely had to have. No, I have to get this or my kids will go hungry, type stuff. I am pretty sure I didn't react as she expected. Scream, yell, let me manipulate you into making it all better....etc. Thanks.

In many ways it was worse. I didn't really touch on the crazy things that were going on the two months before the theft. The theft and fraud just ended up being the straw that broke the camels back. Thanks.

We live in a cul-de-sac and hers is the house I see as I look out my windows. What gets me more than anything now is the awkwardness of trying to ignore this woman who is constantly right in my face. Thanks!

True! She did. I don't think our response was the one she expected. I think she expected screaming, yelling, let me manipulate you into making it all right. We were more, straight to the police, not even going to speak to you about this people!

Thanks. It was both difficult and freeing and the same time. I am not sure that makes sense outside my head. We spent two weeks waiting for the police to investigate before I did my own. The list of who it could have been was finite. I just didn't want to believe that anyone on that small list could do that.
