On Sunday we went unexpectedly to the mountains with our friends Lisa, Brandon, Emily and Abigail. Em is 7 and 3/4's (got to make sure you get that 3/4's in there) and Abi is 4. We loaded everyone up into our new minivan and headed out on our adventure. I think the drive took a little over two hours. The men were up front, the ladies in the 2nd row captains chairs and the kids all fit nicely in the back bench seat. Luckily for me we put Em in the middle as she fed Nicky his bottle once we hit the road.
We had a wonderful lunch, then headed to downtown Boone. We spent a lot of time in The Mast General Store. One side was all clothing, hiking equipment, and shoes. The other was toys and barrels and barrels of candy. I haven't seen some of the candy they sell in there for years. I escaped with only one purchase of a onesie for Nicky and the girls each got one present. Em a metal lunch box with horses and Abi a lockable diary with a horse on front. I sense a theme there. We spent more time wandering up and down the main strip looking at the shops.
We decided to pack up and head to the next town over, Blowing Rock. I found loading and unloading the van kind of funny. I would lay my seat flat and sit on it. Ned said, "Nicky needs to go in first" and passed me the baby. I then got Abi in and buckled her up, then had Em sit down. Once they were all situated, I raised my seat up and Lisa and I were able to get settled. So, we're driving down the road, we hadn't got far, when Em tells us that Nicky is buckled into his car seat! What! Apparently, Ned said Nicky needs buckled in first, but that was not what I heard. He had been buckled into the car seat the entire time we were in Boone. I don't know why he was unbuckled then.
Well, I jumped up, lowered the back of my seat down again and sat on it while trying to get him buckled. Isn't this always the time you find a strap is twisted? It wasn't ever twisted before, but now, yes it's twisted. We're driving on this really windy mountain road, which didn't help. I finally get him buckled in and I am trying to raise my seat back up so I can get strapped in also. Ned hits a curve and I about go flying into Lisa's lap! By the time I got into my seat I was laughing pretty hard.
When we got to Blowing Rock they had a band playing in the park. It was a lot of fun to wander around the shops and listen to the music. We let the girls play in the park before we were done for the day. All in all, we had a great time. All the kids were really good and we all had a blast. I am so glad they invited us spur of the moment.
